ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Everyone's body ages at some time in their life. Ageing is the loss of an organ's ability to function. The elderly are generally seen as a distinct and often unwelcome group of individuals in today's society by most people. In addition to the physical changes that occur in the human body throughout the third decade of life, there are also psychosocial issues such as loneliness, depression, long-term sickness, desertion by family members, and impotence. Seniors' lives are full of changes that make them particularly vulnerable. Objectives: To assess the psychosocial problem among elderly staying at selected community area of Jammu. To determine the association of problems of elderly living in community area with its socio-demographic variables. Material and Methods: A descriptive study was conducted to assess the psychosocial problems among the elderly staying at selected community area of Jammu. The study was conducted at community area, Karwanda, Jammu. A total of 100 study subjects were enrolled using purposive sampling technique. Research instrument was consisted in two parts; part-A: sociodemographic profile of elderly, part-B: Psycho-social problems Five-point likert scale. After informed consent, data were collected through interview technique. Results: The result out of 100 elderly; majority 75% elderly had moderate psychosocial problems followed by 18% had mild problems and only 7% had severe problems. The mean score of psycho-social problems was 104.67 ± 17.444. The mean score for social was 20.49 ± 4.066. The mean score for loneliness was 21.30 ± 4.359. The mean score for stress was 21.38 ± 4.233. The mean score for low self-esteem was 21.13 ± 4.196. The mean anxiety score was 20.37 ± 4.688. The socio-demographic variables like age, sex, marital status, educational status, family income, occupation, and type of family are found significant at 5%. Conclusion: The study concluded that the elderly had various level of psycho-social problems at community area of karwanda, Jammu. Nurses’ role are very important to understand, management and prevention of these problems among elderly giving by psychological support and explain about elderly programme which running by Indian government so that it an helpful for them. The nurse should explain to their family member also they should more concern about elderly problems.
