ABSTRACT:
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the larval form of Taenia solium and is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide. Although antiparasitic therapy is generally effective, recurrence after a prolonged asymptomatic period is rare and poorly documented. This case study reports a rare recurrence of neurocysticercosis in a 38-year-old female who presented with recurrent seizures, headache, vomiting, and visual disturbances 18 years after initial treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple ring-enhancing lesions with perilesional edema suggestive of active parenchymal neurocysticercosis, while computed tomography showed calcified granulomas indicating previous healed lesions. Serological tests were positive for T. solium antibodies, and mild eosinophilia was observed. The patient was treated with albendazole, corticosteroids, and antiepileptic drugs, resulting in significant clinical improvement. Nursing management included seizure monitoring, medication administration, patient education, and preventive counseling on hygiene and sanitation. This case highlights the importance of long-term follow-up, early diagnosis, interdisciplinary management, and nursing interventions in preventing complications and recurrence of neurocysticercosis in endemic regions.
